GATES MILLS, Ohio- The Gilmour Lancers took on the Pittsburgh Vengeance in a two-game set this weekend. The first game was Friday, as the Lancers took the ice on “Pink The Rink” night. The Lancers had Michael Carr in goal, as he only allowed 1.75 goals per game this season prior to the game. The Lancers started the game off with a 2-0 lead, as Donald Dickens and Brett Reed led the attack early for Gilmour. The Vengeance were able to make it 3-2 by the end of the period, as they were able to get two goals past Michael Carr. The Lancers were up 3-2 at the end of the first period.
After the close first period, Gilmour opened up the floodgates. They scored seven goals in the final two periods, which completely caught the Vengeance off-guard. Even a goalie change for the Vengeance couldn’t help them out late in the game, as Gilmour’s offense showed the powerful team they can be. The Lancers cruised to the 10-3 win and looked to get ready for the game Saturday.
In what was a very physical game, Head Coach Mike Chiellino liked the way his team played from a physical standpoint: “One of our goals actually going in was we wanted the guys to play a clean, physical game. I thought we actually did it all three periods…one of the very few things that we actually did do the whole game. But they matched the physicality too, which definitely threw a wrench in our gameplan.”
Emotions were running high Saturday afternoon, as the physicality between the teams the day before were going to be remembered during the second game of the weekend. The Lancers had scored ten goals in the previous two games, so defense would be something the Vengeance would have to lock down on if they wanted to have a fighting chance.
Kasper Urbaniak was in between the pipes for the Lancers, as he looked to match his counterpart Michael Carr’s successful game the day before. The Vengeance had two unorthodox goals, with one just tapped in and the other skipping past Urbaniak. The Pittsburgh Vengeance looked to have come out with a different game plan, one they were having better success worked.
The Lancers were able to take advantage of their good shot selection, as Daniel Menges was able to get the Lancers on the board off of a Nick Hawkins pass. The Lancers found themselves down 2-1 at the end of the first period.
Both teams had to recover from a short break, due to time restrictions. It would seem to affect the teams, as most of the period was very defensive-minded. Nick Hawkins was able to follow-up and score a second-chance goal after Donald Dickens had his shot deflected by the Vengeance’s Goaltender, Kaden Mahsoob. Just when it seemed that the Lancers found their momentum, a power-play was scored by Pittsburgh, as they found themselves up 3-2. The Vengeance would hold a lead over the Lancers at the end of the period, as Gilmour looked to come back in the third period.
The third period was all Lancers. The Vengeance came out very content with their lead and as a result, the Lancers took advantage. Sam Lau tied the game up off of beautiful puck movement, but Gilmour was not finished in this game. The game-winning goal was scored by Kyle Warren with forty-one seconds left, as he found an opening in the slot and took advantage.
Gilmour will look to keep their undefeated season alive next week, as the Pittsburgh Selects come in to face the Lancers in a two-game set.
