Beachwood – For 4 and 1/2 innings Geneva and Beachwood were involved in a classic pitcher’s duel. However in the bottom of the fifth, the Beachwood Bison scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead over the Geneva Eagles.
The Eagles would not quit. With two out in the top of the 7th, they scored 4 runs to defeat the Bison, 5–3.
“Super impressed with the guys, obviously it came down to the last inning, two outs and we made a heck of a rally,” said Geneva Head Baseball Coach Terry Hejduk. “That says a lot for the guys moving forward. Huge confidence booster.”
The Eagles started the scoring in the top of the fourth when Shae Arkenburg and Curtis Maier singled. Logan Queen drove in Arkenburg on a fielder’s choice to give Geneva a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 5th, Beachwood got two clutch doubles from freshman Ethan Malek and sophomore Josh Rosenblitt to plate 3.
Down to their last out in the top of the seventh, Geneva scored three runs on clutch hits by Cafaro, Arkenburg, and Queen.
Queen had the game winning hit when he lined a double to right field which drove in two runs and put Geneva in the lead 5-3.
“Coming up, I was really nervous, I didn’t want to be the last out,” said Queen. “I got up 2-0, I was thinking, walk is just as good as a hit here. Made a bad swing at a ball in the dirt. I was like all or nothing, the next ball was right down the middle. I was all over it. I knew as soon as I hit it, it was going.”
For the game, Geneva was led by Arkenburg who was 3-4, with an RBI and Jack Cafaro who was 2-3. Also, Logan Queen was 1-3, with 3 RBI.
Beachwood was led by Josh Rosenblitt who was 2-4 with an RBI double, and Ethan Malek who was 1-3, and also had an RBI.
With the victory, Geneva is now 5-1 on the season and will play a doubleheader against West Geauga on Saturday.
Beachwood is now 2-3 on the season and will take on Hawken, also on Saturday.
