Solon’s Lady Comets, second-seeded in the OHSAA Division 1 Euclid district, are usually a tall order for their opponents. Just ask anyone who has to go up against the Comets’ Valencia Myers. The talented 6-foot-2 senior scored nine points on Thursday. But more importantly, she had nine rebounds and five blocked shots as the Comets flew by seventh-seeded Twinsburg, 73-34.
Twinsburg gave a good effort, converting a high percentage of free throws and nearly matching Solon’s rebound total in the first half. But the Lady Tigers didn’t have an answer for Solon’s Gabby Mitchell. The 5-foot-7 senior started strong with 10 first-quarter points. For the game she converted nine baskets, six of them from 3-point range, and was the night’s leading scorer with 24 points.
It was an excellent team effort on offense for the Lady Comets as six players in addition to Mitchell made at least one 3-pointer.
Twinsburg junior guard Nya Bussey was the Lady Tigers’ leading scorer with 12. She hit a 3-pointer with 1:39 remaining in the first half, bringing Twinsburg within nine points at 28-19. But that was as close as the Tigers would get.
Solon made a dazzling assortment of shots in the second half, overwhelming Twinsburg 43-15 in the final two quarters.
The Lady Comets will meet sixth-seeded Nordonia on Monday night at Euclid High School. The Knights upset third-seeded Cleveland Heights on Thursday to advance to the district semifinals vs. Solon.
