Cleveland- The Guardians organization’s #1 prospect, Gavin Williams, made his major league debut on Wednesday. In his much anticipated start Williams showed a great deal of tenacity. The 23-year old right-hander cruised through the first two innings. However, the rookie found himself in a jam during the third inning. Williams gave up two hits to start off the inning and then a homer to A’s Ryan Noda. Just like that the Guardians were down four runs.
Cleveland’s offense answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the 3rd cutting the A’s lead to one. Williams went back out to the mound and did not allow another run for the remainder of his outing. He showed the poise of a veteran with his ability to shake off the four-run inning and regain his focus. The crowd at Progressive Field showed their praise for him with a standing ovation when he left the game in the 5th. In his debut, Williams pitched 5.2 innings allowing four hits, four runs, walking three batters and striking out four.

Josh Naylor continued his hot streak homering in the 7th to bring the Guardians within one run. However, the best moment for Josh came in the 8th inning. Josh’s brother, Bo had his first major league hit with a line drive center field. Bo’s big brother’s reaction was priceless.

Steven Kwan followed with a double scoring Bo and Myles Straw putting Cleveland up 7-6. Emmanuel Clase held the Athletics scoreless to record his 22nd save of the season.
