The AT&T Byron Nelson Tournament went into extra playoff holes Sunday evening and it came down to Brooks Koepka and the venerable Spaniard, Sergio Garcia. This playoff would be Garcia’s 11th Tour playoff.
Koepka had a three shot lead for a time during regulation, but was unable to keep it while Garcia steadily closed the gap. Koepka had to do some scrambling the last round just to keep his lead, and when it came down to the first playoff hole, the one club in his bag that had been working well for him all tournament, his driver, let him down.
Koepka ended up putting his drive into the water off the 18th tee and double-bogeyed the hole, while Garcia remained calm and would par the playoff hole to take the victory.
Local Irving, Texas favorite Jordan Spieth was unable to capitalize on his first three rounds of 64, 65, and 67, and ended up shooting a 74 for his final round to finish tied for 18th. To be completely honest, it is really annoying how the golf world is trying to push stardom on this kid when the majors he has won include one Masters championship, and “lucked” into his U.S. Open victory thanks to Dustin Johnson…just saying…but that’s neither here nor there.
Garcia won the Byron Nelson Tournament back in 2004 when Byron was still with us. And with this victory, Garcia ties Seve Ballesteros for the most wins on the PGA Tour by a Spanish-born player.
Next week is the Dean & Deluca Invitational, May 26th – May 29th. Last years champion: Chris Kirk. See you there!
