In some truly sad news coming out of the NFL, former SF 49ers great Dwight Clark passed away after his year long battle with ALS earlier today. The news of his passing was actually broken by his wife who used the late great tight end’s twitter account as shown below.
I’m heartbroken to tell you that today I lost my best friend and husband. He passed peacefully surrounded by many of the people he loved most. I am thankful for all of Dwight’s friends, teammates and 49ers fans who have sent their love during his battle with ALS. Kelly Clark.

As many Browns fans know, Dwight Clark was the first GM of the Cleveland Browns “new regime” upon their return to Cleveland in 1999. Clark was with the Browns organization through 2002 until Butch Davis took full control and Clark left the team.
Before his time with the Browns, he most well known for his career playing in San Francisco. Clark will live in football lore forever as he was part of “the catch” with Joe Montana. Clark leapt and caught a 6-yard pass from quarterback Joe Montana in the back of the end zone to give the 49ers a 28–27 victory and advance to Super Bowl XVI.
Clark compiled 506 catches for 6,750 yards and 48 touchdowns, along with 50 rushing yards in his eight NFL seasons with the 49ers. He was 61 at the time of his passing.
