In what has seemed like a long and winding road of a process, it appears that the fight everyone wants to see will happen.
Early this morning, retired boxer Floyd Mayweather announced he was coming out of retirement for one reason and one reason only: To fight Conor McGregor. Regarded as one of the best boxers of all-time and certainly the best of the
Regarded as one of the best boxers of all-time and certainly the best of the modern-era, Mayweather has been engaged in verbal exchanges with McGregor for some time now. The murmurs of a potential superfight started more so on McGregor’s end, when the “Notorious” one would spend more time talking about Floyd than his upcoming opponent during press conferences. McGregor would claim he would do what he set out to do in the UFC and then move on to defeat Mayweather in a fight.
Check out this exchange below at a UFC 205 press conference last November, where McGregor proceeds to throw a quick jab at Mayweather while talking about his Octagon endeavors:
Obviously, Floyd Mayweather shared his fair share of talk about the situation.
Since the initial rumors of the two titans clashing, talks have slowly progressed for this matchup. The main issue for both men is who is going to receive more money for this fight. UFC President Dana White tried to get the deal done late last year, offering the same amount of cash to both fighters to hold the fight under his umbrella. Mayweather scoffed at the offer and that’s where the financial part halted.
But it appears today that “Money” Mayweather is done talking about the money and wants to fight.
“For Conor McGregor, I’m coming out of retirement, just to fight Conor McGregor. I don’t want to hear no more excuses about the money, about the UFC. Sign the paper with the UFC so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain. Let’s fight in June. You’re the B-side, I’m the A side. We’re not here to cry about money. I’m tired of all this crying about money and talking about you want to fight. You blowing smoke up everybody’s ass. If you want to fight, sign the paperwork, let’s do it. Today, I’m officially out of retirement for Conor McGregor. We don’t need to waste no time. We need to make this s–t happen quickly. Let’s get it on in June.”
So, will there be a summertime showdown between Mayweather and McGregor? We’ll wait and see.
