In the wake of the Chris Benoit tragedy the WWE was in desperate search to turn their image around quickly and hoped to do so with a great Summerslam. They didn’t come close!
It was also following up a lackluster WrestleMania 23 so the majority of the storylines, if not all of the storylines were drastically different as they tried to separate themselves from that card as well.
One hindrance was the absence of Edge, RVD, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker due to injury. However, they did benefit from the return of superstars like HHH and Rey Mysterio.
The two big returns in one night did help this card. HHH returned and was victorious over King Booker T while Rey Mysterio claimed victory over Chavo Guerrero, the same main who put him on the shelf.
The IC match was a three way between 3 heels, Mr. Kennedy, Umaga and Carlito. Much like any match with three heels, the crowd was not much involved as Umaga held on to the title.
The World Title Match fell flat as The Great Khali got himself DQ’ed against the game challenger of Batista in a short and unaspiring match.
The main event did hit on all levels however as Randy Orton and John Cena put on a 5 start classic that saw Cena retain the title.
