WWF SummerSlam 2002 took place on August 25, 2002, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.
It was highlighted by “The Next Big Thing” Brock Lesnar defeating The Rock for his WWE Heavyweight Championship.
It was the capper of an incredible summer for Lesnar that also saw him win the King of the Ring earlier in the year. Lesnar would go on to dominate WWE for the next 2 years before suddenly leaving to try his hand at pro football.
The card was remembered for the classic return of Shawn Michael’s after 4 plus years away from the ring. HBK stole the show as he beat HHH in a street fight. The match went so well that it coursed Michaels to make a return to the ring full time. He would go on to wrestle for 8 more years before retiring for good at Wrestlemania 26 in 2010.
Another show stopper was the opening match between Rey Mysterio and Kurt Angle. Both men were in their prime and looked great. Kurt Angle hung tough with the high flying Mysterio and eventually grounded him long enough to slap on the ankle lock and walk away with the victory.
In a singles match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship it was Rob Van Dam defeating Chris Benoit to win the belt. Also, in a battle of two future Hall of Famers Edge defeated Eddie Guerrero.
In what was more of a low profile match for The Undertaker, he took on and beat Test. It was a Tag team match for the WWE Tag Team Championship that saw The Un-Americans (Lance Storm and Christian) (c) defeated Booker T and Goldust.
