Father of Steubenville student convicted of rape shoots judge

The father of one of the former Steubenville football players convicted of rape in 2013 shot a judge outside of the Jefferson County courthouse today.

Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. was shot around 8 a.m. this morning, and authorities later identified the father of Ma’Lik Richmond, Nathaniel Richmond, as the gunman.

A report from USA Today said that investigators are seeking a motive, and haven’t found a connection to the rape case. A judge from Hamilton County handled the case at the time.

The Steubenville rape case brought international attention to the community. Ma’Lik Richmond served 10 months in a juvenile facility after he was convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl during a 2012 party.

The same report from USA Today said that Gov. John Kasich was told that Bruzzese is expected to survive. The suspect was killed after a probation officer shot him, according to a report from ESPN.
