While tens of thousands of Ohio State Buckeyes fans make the journey to Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl, at least one mother of a player will not be able to watch her son play in the biggest game of his career.
We are not naming the family or the player in respect of their privacy, but this is not right.
This player is an NFL Draft prospect at a school where the football program generates millions of dollars within three-hour broadcasts.
Take into account the types of commercials that will air during Saturday’s Clemson-Ohio State game.
Mixed in with those commercials will be a heavy dose of alcohol promotion.
Millions of dollars going from alcohol companies and other corporations to universities, who claim to care about education, but enact policies that make leaving school early a more appealing option.
Whether you’re on the side of college athletes being paid or not, these schools can afford to send family members to once in a lifetime games, which by the way are generating enormous profit for the school.
We only know of one instance of this on the Buckeyes roster and the family does not wish to draw negative attention, but just think if this is the one instance we’ve heard about, how many more players and families around the country are going through this?
For the players from MAC and MWC schools, it may be a bit more understandable given their funding, but this is THE Ohio State University and this is unacceptable.
Hopefully this problem is fixed in time for the National Championship.
