LAKEWOOD– On a rather warm October afternoon, the St. Edward Eagles took on the Canada Prep Academy Raiders. This was the third time the Eagles and the Raiders met , The Eagles won the two prior games. The first time these teams played, the Eagles shutout the Raiders , and the last time they played the Raiders only managed to score 10 points against St. Edward.
To begin the game both teams got off to a slow start, literally. It was stop and go to start because of uniform malfunctions from both sides, Canada Prep wore their new uniforms that turned out to be extremely tight for them. Plenty of shoulder pad slips in the beginning and a few of the lineman sporting the look Ezekiel Elliott once had.
Kevin Kramer started off the day for the Eagles when he had a QB sneak for a one yard touchdown run with 1:47 remaining in the first. With that score in the first quarter that was the 88th consecutive game the Eagles have had a touchdown, the last time they did not score a touchdown was against St. Ignatius back in 2009 when they were shutout.
In the second quarter Curtis Szelesta had an 11 yard run for a touchdown to extend the Eagles lead 14-0 early on over Canada Prep. Later in the second with 4:15 left, Kramer connected with wide receiver Kordell Hoover for a 25 yard touchdown pass. With that pass , Kramer threw his 10th touchdown pass of the season. With almost two minutes left in the second quarter, Canada Prep punted the ball and Hoover was the punt returner, Hoover called for a fair catch but the ball had rolled passed him and Hoover touched the ball marking it dead at the Eagles 1 yard line. The following play Kramer connected with Hoover once again, this time for a 99 yard touchdown pass. On that play Kramer and Hoover broke the record for longest pass play in Eagles history and made that their longest play on the season , the previous long being 75 yards held by Kramer and Hoover against Buchtel in Week 5. The Eagles took the lead into the half , leading 28-0.
The third quarter was quiet for the most part until 3 minutes left, Seth Burke scored on a 22 yard rushing touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Canada Prep scored but that was not nearly enough to give them the victory as the Eagles held on and won the game, 35-7.
The Eagles improved to 6-1 on the season , and the Raiders fell to 2-3.
Next week the Eagles head down to Cincinnati to take on Cincinnati Moeller (3-5) , before facing St. Ignatius in week 10 at First Energy Stadium for the Holy War .
