Alliance MMA Fight Preview
March 3rd Arnold Classic
Devonte Smith vs Justin Edwards
At 35 years old, following a 2-5 stint in the in the UFC, that included an appearance on The Ultimate Fighter, Justin Edwards is looking to make one last run at the big time. His road will not be easy however as standing in his path is 6-1 Devonte Smith, 11 years his junior and hungry as lion!
Devonte Smith is the second ranked out of 39 active Ohio Pro Light Heavyweights and 11th out of the top 200 in the Northeast Light Heavyweights. He is looking for a big win at the Arnold Classic to vault into the national spotlight, and not just the Northeast part of the country. The “King of the Cage” is currently fighting out of Bedford Ohio.
For Smith, his only pro loss came against John Gunther last January at RFO Big Guns 22. Since then, he has rebounded with a convincing win over Damonte Robinson by triangle choke at Iron Tiger 74. The win came at just 2 minutes and 54 seconds of the very first round. He is looking to continue his rise to the top when he takes on UFC vet, Justin Edwards.
While only having 6 pro fights, Smith is no stranger to the fight game. He has began fighting in 2011 as an Amateur with the NAAFS. As an amateur, he went 7-2-1 and gained valuable experience and cage savvy during that stretch.
At 35 years old, Justin Edwards is 11 years the elder of Smith and will look to use his own experience fighting some of the very best in the world. He started his career with six straight wins, gaining the attention of the UFC. That is when things took a bit of a left turn for him, as he went a disappointing 2-5 with the promotion.
To his credit however, he did chalk up two wins in the largest MMA company on the planet, as well as one against vaunted pro Josh Neer. He also picked up a win against Anthony Mad Dog Macias, who is of very early UFC VI fame. His losses didn’t come against cupcakes either, losing to the likes of Brandon Thatcher and Ramsey Ramsey Nijem.
Since leaving the UFC, Edwards has returned to his winning ways, with a victory over Cody Pahan. That fight however was back in September of 2016, so one will wonder if any ring rust will be on the crafty veteran.
You can check it out on March 3rd, either in attendance or on PPV as this event is sure to deliver!
