Cubs 2023 Number One Draft Pick Matt Shaw Leads South Bend to Victory over Lake County

Eastlake – South Bend scored 6 runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead over Lake County on Friday Night.

South Bend then went on to score 3 more runs and defeated Lake County by a final score of 9-1.

South Bend was led by the Cubs  2023 number one draft pick, Matt Shaw from the University of Maryland.

On the night, Shaw, the Cubs 6th ranked top prospect, went 3-5.

Shaw had a triple in the first inning and then in the fifth inning, Shaw hit a two run home run.

In the eighth inning Shaw singled. 

For the game, Shaw also scored two runs and had 3 RBI.

Shaw is from Brimfield, Massachusetts and is an Alum from Worcester Academy.

After high school, Shaw began his collegiate career with the University of Maryland in 2021.

As a freshman, Shaw led Maryland with a .332 batting average.

In his final year at the University of Maryland, Shaw hit .341, had 24 home runs and 69 RBI in just 62 games.

For his performance, Shaw was named the 2023 Big Ten Player of the Year.

As the Cubs number one draft pick and the 13th overall pick, Shaw signed with the Cubs organization in July for over 4.8 million dollars.

The Captains and Cubs will meet again at Classic Park on Friday night for the fourth game of their six game series.
