After an hour and a half rain delay, the Crew SC was able to play on a soaked pitch that played into the hands of the Whitecaps.
Ola Kamara would get things started for Columbus on a corner kick form Mohammed Saeid in the 11’. Saeid would send a beautiful cross at the perfect height for a high flying, karate kicking Kamara for the finish.
Crew SC would have the lead for a mere 2 minutes until misfortune struck new comer to the Crew SC starting line up Gaston Sauro.
Sauro would record an own goal trying to clear the ball with a header past Steve Clark for a disappointing tying goal for the Whitecaps. The score going into the intermission would be 1-1.
As for the second half, in the 74’, Vancouver would score a goal of their very own thanks to a goal from Andrew Jacobson that would develop from midfield with an assist from Christian Bolanos.
The Crew SC have had recent difficulty taking initiative defensively when their opponent gains possession at midfield. It has happened the past three games where the ball is turned over by Crew SC at midfield and then the defensive midfielders have trouble stopping the ball form reaching reasonable shooting range.
And to ice the game in the 82’, the Whitecap’s Erik Hurtado would blast his initial shot from 6 yards out that would be blocked by Clark.
However, the secondary attempt by Hurtado would be the finishing blow that would encompass the Crew SC season in a nutshell. Vancouver’s lead would be extended to 2 with a score of 3-1.
The match would in a 3-1 loss for the Crew SC. To call this season a hangover from last season would be an understatement. Granted, injuries did not help Columbus’s cause this season, but the lack luster second half effort has plagued the Crew SC all season, and one has to wonder whether or not the players are lacking in motivation coming out of half time.
Greg Berhalter may be good at the X’s and O’s, but it might be time for him to examine his half time speech.
With the loss, Columbus has an overall record of 5 wins, 11 losses, and 11 draws and remains at the very bottom of the Eastern Conference. Next up for the Crew SC is an away match against Orlando City SC at the Citrus Bowl on Saturday, September 17th.
Only 7 more matches left in the regular season and only two of them are home. Be sure to check out the Crew SC before the season is over.
