If you watched WOIO Cleveland 19’s NFL pregame show yesterday, ‘Tailgate 19’ you heard former quarterback and beloved former Brown Bernie Kosar drop a rather interesting bombshell that is getting a lot of attention today.
Kosar stated that he’s tired of the Browns losing ways, and is ready to run the ship itself. The QB said that he would love the Browns to hire him to take over and try to fix all the problems the franchise has had.
“I want to do this, okay?,” Kosar told host Tony Zarrella on the show. “And I’ll fire myself if we are not a competitive NFL team within a year or two.”
The former QB says that he’s not pointing fingers at the player or coaches, but thinks that it’s a “systemic” dysfunction of the organization as a whole, and that over the years there’s been a number of quarterbacks that have had their careers ruined by the fact they have come to Cleveland and not panned out.
Kosar has been dead on for the most part about his thoughts on the failures of the Browns, and yet again 2015 is another lost season for the franchise, as they sit at 2-7 with a rivalry game Sunday in Heinz Field against the Steelers upcoming.
The club has another season with question marks at quarterback as Josh McCown has been trying his best to stay healthy, but even when he is he’s not able to do enough to lead the team to more than one win thus far.
Then there’s the case of Johnny Manziel, who was solid in the first half Thursday in the eventual loss to the Bengals, but then faltered with the rest of the team in the second half of the eventual 31-10 loss.
If Kosar was brought in, one thing is for sure, the QB position would be better, even if he had to go out and coach it himself.
With seven games left the team doesn’t appear to have any answers, and with GM Ray Farmer and coach Mike Pettine both very much on the hot seat, it could be time for owner Jimmy Haslam to go totally outside the box and give someone else, someone who is still very much beloved in Cleveland, a shot.
Speaking to former Browns running back Herman Fontenot Monday, a player who spent considerable time with Kosar during his three seasons in Cleveland in the late 1980’s, he says he heard what Bernie said on WOIO, and that he thinks it’s time for some type of change in the organization as well.
“I listened to the interview this morning as a matter of fact,” Fontenot said. “He’s smart, he’s always been smarter than most people I can tell you that.”
Fontenot agrees with Bernie that the organization has wasted careers of too many quarterbacks and too many high draft picks over the last two plus decades.
“It’s just amazing how many quarterbacks the Cleveland Browns have had that haven’t done anything. One of the craziest things is how many first rounders, first overall or second picks or third picks have the Cleveland Browns had over the last 25 years?”
