Big news last night for the UFC and especially the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier, as the UFC was able to find a opponent for “DC”. Why was it so fast? It seemed like a spider had crawled right into the opportunity. That was what happened, as Anderson “The Spider” Silva answered the call for a three-round, non-title fight against Cormier.
What does this do for the UFC? First off, it re-stacks the UFC 200 card in a different way. Having a non-title fight between two phenomenal fighters is obviously a very good move by the UFC financially- speaking. It brings in the big money that the UFC and Daniel Cormier both wanted and deserved, after the UFC put together a fantastic fight card and DC busted his behind to get ready for UFC 200.
Now, let’s say Anderson Silva wins. The UFC could have a problem similar to when UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor moved up to 170 pounds and lost in a non-title fight to Nate Diaz. What it does is make the champion look vulnerable and the quality of the championship lose some credibility.
So, Daniel Cormier can either defeat an all-time great and propel himself into the next level or fail to defeat Silva and put the title’s prestige into jeopardy. Either way, July 9th just got a whole lot more interesting in a different kind of way.
