Comeback Captains Strike Again

Eastlake OH- Apparently, the Captains like to make things interesting and fall behind beforemounting comebacks and winning late. The Captains played a double header tonight and wonboth games late as they improved their record to 8-4.

In the first game the Captains got their second walk off single, this time from Centerfielder JoeLampe. As he brought in Juan Brito to take Game 1 of the night 3-2 over the Lansing Lugnuts. Will Dion started and struck out 6, pitching 3.2 innings until he reached his pitch count. Sergio

Morillo, and Josh Wolf finished the game out as Wolf picked up the win. In the bottom of the 7 th (in the minors, when there is a double header, the teams play 7 inning games) with Juan Brito on second, and two outs, Joe Lampe came to the plate and hit a drive into the right field gap to score Brito and walk off for the second game in a row as the Captains walked off on an Isaiah Greene walk +off last night. The Captains and Lugnuts went back into the locker rooms and there was an energy in the stadium as everyone prepared for the second game.

That energy was immediately taken out of the ballpark when the Lugnuts came out swinging in Game 2. And literally, the first pitch of the game was a home run from the Lugnuts Caeden Trenkle who hit a shot to LF off Trenton Denholm to start the game 1-0. A double from Daniel Susac followed by an RBI single from Jonny Butler had the Lugnuts with an early 2-0 lead and the Captains didn’t look to have the same energy.

The Lugnuts added a home run from Max Muncy in the 3rd inning and looked to be cruising. The Captains couldn’t get a runner on base seemingly, and when they did, they either hit into a double play in the 2nd inning, or got caught stealing to end the 3rd there was no momentum. And going into the bottom of the 6th, I was ready to just call it a split and move on, as the Captains were down 3-0 and couldn’t get any traction.

The bottom of the 6 th was all the traction they needed as the Captains got 10 at bats as they poured on run after run. It started with Cesar Idrogo’s single, followed by a Dayan Frias single, followed by a bases clearing double from Brito. At that point the stadium started coming to life as the Captains were in business and making their move.

Yordys Valdes doubled to bring home Brito, then advanced to third base when Joe Lampe grounded out to advance the runner, and immediately Valdes scored on a single from Burgos. Isaiah Greene then hit a 2-run homer to LF to give the Captains a 6-run inning as they took the lead for good in the bottom of the 6 th inning. A score in the top of the 7 th from the Lugnuts made it 6-4 but Tyler Thorton got the win as he struck out Max Muncy to end the game and preserve the 6-4 win.
