The Cleveland State Vikings fell to Valparaiso 78-67 on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Wolstein Center.
The Vikings are now 5-13 on the season and 1-5 in the Horizon League while Valpo improved to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in league-play.
Rob Edwards led the Vikings with 22 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals while Bobby Word scored 14 points, converting 4 shots from 3 point land.
Demonte Flannigan contributed 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks. Nelson Maxwell had a strong game off the bench, recording 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Jibri Blount had 5 points and 4 rebounds.
Even though it was not a win over the venerable Valpo, the Vikings had contributions across the board from several players. The big 3 of Flannigan, Word, and Edwards showed up to play but the bench with the exception of Maxwell once again was lacking in scoring.
What doesn’t help either is the reoccurring trend that is the “streakiness” of the Vikings as a whole. They will go on stretches of scoring and not scoring and scoring again. If they can somehow find a way to play 40 minutes of consistent, productive basketball, they may have a shot at competing against the remaining scheduled teams including ones they have already played.
Next up for CSU is a game at Oakland on January 16th for a 7:00 PM ET tip-off time.
