Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor Working Hard This Offseason; Will this Project Work in 2016?

The Cleveland Browns have a little situation on their hands heading into training camp. The organization selected four wide receivers in this year’s NFL draft. In the first round, the team selected Corey Coleman from Baylor, who hopes to become the dominant work horse on offense in 2016.

Last season the Browns picked up Terrelle Pryor, a former quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Pryor was a standout quarterback and won numerous awards. His fantastic college statistics made him a player to be reckoned with.

In 2011, Pryor would go on and be selected by the Oakland Raiders in the third-round of the 2011 Supplemental Draft. In his first season with the Raiders, Pryor served an NFL 5 game suspension due to his Ohio State scandal.  He would line up against the Kansas City Chiefs in a week 7 matchup as a wide receiver but the play was nullified due to a false start penalty on Pryor.

In 2012, Pryor struggled to get game time as the starting quarterback. In a week 16 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, Pryor caught a 22-yard reception. In week 17 and in his first NFL start as quarterback, Pryor threw two touchdowns to one interception but couldn’t come up with a victory. This was just the beginning of his long NFL journey.

The 2013 season was by far the best for the Oakland Raiders starting quarterback (that’s not saying much). He finished the year throwing seven touchdowns for 1,798 yards, but earned himself 11 interceptions and 5 fumbles. These statistics are very horrible but he did manage to achieve a big milestone. He has the longest run by a quarterback in NFL history. This happened in a week 8 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. On a simple read option, Pryor took it 93 yards to the house. Here is the play:

After the 2013 season, Pryor was traded to the Seattle Seahawks for a seventh-round draft pick. He was released, went to the Chiefs on January 7, 2015 then was released in May. He signed with the Bengals on May 10th but was once again released on June 18th. He finally made it to the Cleveland Browns on June 22, 2015 where he was claimed off the waivers. Pryor made the 53-man roster but was waived on September 10th. After an injury to Josh McCown, he was called up again and played in the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers where he caught one pass for 42 yards.

You can say Terrelle Pryor has an uphill battle to make this 53-man roster. After the organization drafted four wide receivers and already have some that may not make the team, the future is looking faint for this quarterback turned receiver.

Will this “Project” work in 2016? :

Yes. I believe the fact that Pryor was once a quarterback is what is going to keep him on this roster. Yes, the Browns have a ton of quarterbacks but what Pryor can do is open up gadget plays as a wide receiver. These trick plays can be necessary if the Browns are down a few points and need to get down the field quick. We have seen this with many teams over the years. The Browns’ division opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers, had Antwaan Randle El for many years and look how he did. That organization had many great receivers but when Randle El had his name called you didn’t know what to expect. That will be the same way with Pyror.

Over the offseason Pryor has been working extremely hard to get into shape and practice his route-running abilities. Over on his Twitter account he updates his fans on what exercises he has been completing. Just yesterday he posted a picture of him and a bunch of athletes working with former star receiver Randy Moss.

This is not the first time that these two have worked together. Pryor is ready for the 2016 NFL season and if you are interested give him a follow on his social media account. A few weeks ago he posted a video of him working on his foot work.

The 6’5, 233 pound quarterback turned receiver hopes to lay it all on the line this preseason and make the Browns 53-man roster.
