Cleveland, OH- The Browns signed defensive tackle, Michael Dwumfour, to a reserve/futures contract on Tuesday. Dwumfour split his college career at Michigan and Rutgers. In his 42 college games he had 61 tackles, 4 sacks and an interception.

What is a reserve/futures contract?

This contract allows teams to keep players for off-season and training camp without having to officially add them to the roster until March. After adding Dwumfour, Cleveland has a dozen players signed to reserve/futures contracts. These players are as follows:

  • WR Daylen Baldwin
  • WR Mike Harley Jr.
  • WR Marquez Stevenson
  • TE Zaire Mitchell-Paden
  • RB John Kelly Jr.
  • RB Nate McCrary
  • OL Tyrone Wheatley Jr.
  • DT Roderick Perry II
  • DE Sam Kamara
  • LB Storey Jackson
  • S Bubba Bolden

Dwumfour career in the NFL

The defensive tackle played his last year of college at Rutgers. He was an undrafted free agent and was signed by the NY Jets that year (2021). The Jets waived Dwumfour at the end of preseason. The Houston Texans signed him to the practice squad in October.

Dwumfour would make one start for the Texans and appeared in 10 games. He recorded five tackles and a sack with the Texans prior to being waived on December 7. The San Francisco 49ers added Dwumfour to their practice squad on December 10. He played two games with the 49ers in which he recovered a fumbled and had two sacks.

Potential

Dwumfour is a solid defensive tackle that needs consentient reps. The Browns are in need of solutions to their defensive tackling issues. Dwumfour isn’t the answer, however, he may be part of the solution. The 6’1″ tackle is just under 300 lbs. He’s shown speed and quickness to give an interior pass rush.

This signing will leave many fans saying “who?” and yes, Dwumfour’s signing isn’t jaw-dropping news however, the Browns need help at defensive tackle and they have to start somewhere.
