The Cleveland Browns are normally ranked last when it comes to rankings. For what seems to be the first time in a long time, this is not the case. A topic that the organization always struggles with is the quarterback position.
Another season, another list that ridicules the Cleveland Browns and their quarterbacks. In a recent Pro Football Focus article, writer Sam Monson ranked all 32 NFL teams and their quarterback situation. The Browns were ranked 30th and Monson had a great explanation why:
The Browns look set to try and rediscover the best of Robert Griffin III, and if they can find that player, they are a lot better off than this ranking, but I think there is far more work involved than one offseason. They have found themselves a legitimate superstar-reclamation project, but will essentially need to rebuild RG III’s game from the ground up. The last time he was playing—back in 2014—he was completing just 50 percent of his passes under pressure for a passer rating in the 50s. Josh McCown has been a below average starter who had one freak-season of excellent play in Chicago back in 2013, and even that year was only 427 snaps worth of action. Cody Kessler is an intriguing guy for the future with excellent accuracy, but he may only see the field if and when the other two fail.
Monson made some points that make sense. The great thing about this ranking is the Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is NOT ranked dead last. The New York Jets took that position mainly due to their barnyard full of backup quarterbacks and how Ryan Fitzpatrick has YET to re-sign with the organization. When your starter looks to be Geno Smith then your team is in some trouble.
Browns fans will find out early if this 30th ranking is accurate or not. I sure hope that Robert Griffin III can provide a spark the team has been looking for and ignite the offense in 2016.
