Looking at the 2017 draft, this could also prove to be hit or miss for Cleveland. They made the right decision in picking Myles Garrett the best player in the draft first overall.
After that, they passed on taking Malik Hooker or a QB again to move down and take Jabrill Peppers and a future first round pick. They finished up day one with moving up to take a young athletic TE in David Njoku.
What did this years top picks mean for the current state of affairs? It means that with another young DE, last year’s first pick in the third round Nassib will serve as a backup to Ogbah and Myles Garrett going forward.
Nate Orchard the second round pick the year before that will also be a backup in that role meaning a lot of high draft picks will not get the opportunity to be the guy.
Njoku meant the release of veteran and former Pro Bowl TE Gary Barnidge and meant 2016 fourth round pick Seth DeValve is on pace to be nothing more than a backup as well. Peppers is the pick that depth wise made the most sense. He comes in and starts immediately at safety and brings consistency to the return game on special teams.
As for the rest of the draft, Kizer going in the second round meant the end for last year’s third round pick Kessler. It also means the Browns might be out of the running for a QB in the draft if they end up with another high draft pick or don’t want to use some of their multiple draft picks to move up and get one.
