When you have good pitching and good offense, good things will happen. Chagrin Falls had both of those Tuesday, as the Tigers defeated Benedictine, 10-3, in a Division II sectional final.
It all started when Chagrin Falls scored three in the first. Benedictine pitcher Billy Boehick hit the first two batters.
Kyle Zaluski delivered a two-run double to center. Colin Kennedy later hit an RBI single to score pitcher Erik Wilson.
Zaluski and Kennedy led the way on offense, each game going 3-for-4 and combining for five RBI’s.
Chagrin Falls head coach Michael Sweeney just wanted to put pressure on the pitchers early.
“That’s our model and that’s how we play,” Sweeney said. “We try to do different things just to make the pitchers think a lot and keep the pressure on them.”
Benedictine would get on the board in the third inning when Jaret Glassman doubled to center to score Marlon Moore to make it 3-1.
Chagrin took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the third after an RBI single by Adam Bencko.
The next inning, the door opened wide, as the Tigers scored five runs to make it a 10-1 game, thanks to Zaluski sending two runners home and an RBI from Kennedy once again.
The Bengals picked up two more runs in the fifth, but Wilson was effective all game.
“I knew they were a tough team, but I just had to go out and throw strikes,” Wilson said. “It was exciting to get the win and I feel great.”
Top-seeded Chagrin Falls (20-5) moves on to face #4 Ravenna (12-6) in a district semifinal on May 15 at Euclid High School.
