The Cleveland Cavaliers issued a press release shortly after Thursday’s practice, announcing that three players have been waived:
The Cleveland Cavaliers have waived guard Markel Brown, forward Jonathan Holmes and forward Cory Jefferson, Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts.
Brown appeared in six preseason games for the Cavs, averaging 4.8 points and 1.7 rebounds in 14.3 minutes per game.
Holmes appeared in six preseason games for the Cavs, averaging 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 17.4 minutes per game.
Jefferson appeared in six preseason games for the Cavs, averaging 7.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in 20.3 minutes per game.
It appeared unlikely for Jefferson or Holmes to make the roster even from the beginning of training camp, as the Cavs are already loaded with forwards, but Brown was part of a battle for the backup point guard position.
As of now, rookie Kay Felder is the backup point guard and DeAndre Liggins could make the roster as the third point guard and an option at shooting guard, but the Cavs could still pursue other veteran free-agents.
Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon reported that the Cavs are pursuing a trade for a veteran point guard because the team does not feel Felder is ready to handle a significant amount of playing time as a rookie.
