The Cleveland Cavaliers found a way to open up a roster spot, as the team sent Chris Andersen and cash considerations to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for a protected second round draft pick.

The move opens up a space, presumably for a backup point guard, but also possibly to acquire a backup center.
The NBA Trade Deadline is Feb. 23 and the Cavs could try to acquire a player via trade or wait to see which players are bought out and become free-agents.
Cleveland doesn’t have much in terms of trade assets, but a $4.4 million trade exception could be enough to pry away a veteran point guard from a team that decides to sell.
#Hornets to immediately waive Chris Andersen, likely sending Birdman into retirement. Offering #Cavs tax relief for cash. Pick a throwaway.

The second round draft pick (reportedly top 55-protected in 2017) acquired from Charlotte won’t have much value. Perhaps the Cavs would be willing to part with one of the players on the back end of the bench.
They also own the draft rights of Turkish prospect Cedi Osman, who could be included in a trade along with the trade exception.
