BROOKLYN, Ohio- The Parma Redmen and Benedictine Bengals took the ice for a first-round matchup on Wednesday, as the winner would play the St. Edward’s Eagles.
The Redmen would start off strong, as Matt Higginbotham would score a minute into the game, finishing a top-shelf wrister at the 1:01 mark. Benedictine would seem to get into trouble when Michael Wilk would get put into the sin bin for roughing. Oddly enough, Matt Carson would work his way into the slot and score a backhander to knot the game up at one in the middle of the first. Parma would find the lead once again off of the stick of Higginbotham, who struck late in the frame to send Parma into the break leading 2-1.
The second frame was a hard-hitting period, with both teams not allowing anything inside of their defensive zones. Luke Brown would be able to score the equalizer with a wrister at the 6:50 mark, as the Bengals would head into the break with a clean slate tied 2-2. Parma would have 1:42 left on their power play going into the third period.
After a scoreless third period, the two teams would head to overtime. Matt Carson would strike for his second goal of the game in the extra frame, as he would send the Bengals to the second round of the tournament with a marker through the five-hole at the 5:01 mark of the frame.
Benedictine will take on St. Edward’s on February 19th at 12:00pm.
