Captains Take Series Over Dragons

The Lake County Captains welcomed the Dayton Dragons to town for a three-game series to kick off their 2023 season. The Captains, who won the Midwest League East Division last year, looked to continue their momentum into the new year with a series win over their in-state opponents

Game 1 – Thursday April 6th

The Captains took control early in this one putting up eight runs in the first four innings. Captains OF Jorge Burgos hit a grand slam in the first inning and finished the night with two hits and 5 RBI. OF Joe Lampe added two hits of his own, while first baseman Will Bartlett and catcher Micael Ramirez each drove in a run. A late comeback attempt from the Dragons in the ninth inning fell short as the Captains were able to hold on and take game one 8-3

Game 2 – Friday April 7th

The bats were a little quieter for game two as both teams combined for a total of three runs and six hits. The Captains scored both of their runs in the second inning while the Dragons scored their lone run late in the contest in the eighth inning. Burgos had another hit, along with DH Christian Cairo, while third baseman Yordys Valdes added a hit and RBI for the night. The Captains were able to hold onto their lead to defeat the Dragon 2-1 and take a 2-0 series lead

Game 3 – Saturday April 8th

The final game of the series kicked off on Saturday afternoon with the Captains looking for the sweep to take the three-game series from the Dragons. The Captains got on the board first in the fourth inning that was kicked off by CF Jake Fox. Fox singled to open the inning for Lake County. Yordys Valdes drew a walk in his next at bat to put two runners on with no outs. Isaiah Green got to base thanks to a fielding error by the Dragons to load the bases for the Captains. A pair of strikeouts for Dayton saw the Captains first baseman Will Bartlett facing two down with the bases loaded. Bartlett, swinging on the second pitch delivered, hit a line drive single that drove in the Captains two runs for the day. Dayton, who had a habit of scoring late in this series continued that trend for game three. The Dragons scored one run in the 7th thanks to a Jose Serrano single and exploded for six more runs in the top of the 8th. Dragons’ Blake Dunn homer, a bases loaded walk, and a Matheu Nelson single helped Dayton put up six more runs to take a 7-2 lead late in the game. The deficit proved to be too much for the Captains to overcome as they fell short and dropped game three to the Dragons 7-2
