After six seasons on the Cleveland Cavaliers coaching staff, including two successful seasons with the Canton Charge as head coach (62-38), Jordi Fernandez has been hired by the Denver Nuggets.
Fernandez, who’ll be an assistant coach in Denver, will now get a chance to collaborate with his long-time friend and head coach of the Nuggets, Mike Malone.
Malone has quite a link with the Cavs, as he was an Assistant Coach under Mike Brown from 2005-2010. In a recent interview with Amico Hoops, Malone had this to say about Fernandez:
“For one, he has a tremendous player development background. That is something we put a lot of emphasis on.”
Coach Malone spoke more of Fernandez’s coaching attributes, saying:
“He has head coaching experience and did a great job in Canton. He’s a very good teacher and relates especially well to young players. He’s a great person with a terrific work ethic. He fits the culture we’re trying to create throughout the entire organization.”
With Fernandez’s departure, Canton will now look for a replacement head coach. Amico Hoops reports that Charge assistant coach Nate Reinking may have a solid shot at landing the job.
Fernandez has said that his goal is to become an NBA head coach. This opportunity will bring him one step closer.
