PARMA, OHIO – The Canfield Cardinals and North Olmsted Eagles played a classic back and forth affair Friday morning in Parma, as the Cardinals were just a bit better taking home a 4-2 win on the first day of the annual Bruce Anderson Normandy Holiday Hockey Tournament.
The Cardinals, who last season went 9-8-0 in the White South of the GCHSHL, held on after scoring the go-ahead and winning goal with 5:05 to play in the second period.
The third period was filled with a lot of chances on each side, but Canfield goalie Ben Janik was up to task, stopping 32 of 34 shots, including 11 in the final 15 minutes to earn the hard fought win.
The Eagles, who went 15-7-0 and finished second to Strongsville in the Red South last season, got a solid effort in net from senior goalie Joey Warszawski, who himself was tough stopping 32 shots in the setback.
The first period saw the Cardinals jump out first on a goal by Eli Dredge with just 2:10 into the contest to take an early 1-0 Cardinals lead. The assist went to Joe Scoleri on the goal.
North Olmsted answered in quick fashion, as just 10 seconds later Shawn Donovan found the back of the net to tie the contest at one. The assist on the goal went to Riley Vertosnik and Jake Mlady.
The Eagles took their only lead of the game less than two minutes later, with Jake Hirz scoring past Janik to make it a 2-1 North Olmsted lead with 10:39 to play first period.
Again though the next goal came quick, as 19 seconds later it was Canfield tying the game at two, as Scoleri gained another point with the goal, getting the assist from Jonas Epp to make it 2-2.
The two teams went the rest of the period without scoring, with the Eagles outshooting the Cardinals 12-10 in the first 15 minutes of play.
The second period was nip and tuck with each team getting shots on net but not converting, and finally with 5:05 to play in the second, Brian Woak lit the lamp to give Canfield the one-goal edge at 3-2.
The Cardinals outshot the Eagles 13-8 in the second for a two period total of 23-20 after 30 minutes.
The final goal came with the Eagles going with a sixth attacker, as Alex Rusu won the puck at center ice and wristed it in for the final goal to make it 4-2 with eight seconds left.
The Cardinals have a 6:35pm Saturday game as they will take on CVCA in another game in the holiday tourney. The Eagles will back on the ice against Chagrin Falls Saturday night.
