This past weekend was sorely needed by Cleveland SC in their quest for another playoff berth in the 2023 NPSL Soccer Season. After a tough 1-0 loss to Erie on the 11th, CSC found their scoring touch and their defensive prowess in sweeping FC Columbus, 3-0 and 4-0 in a home/away series last weekend.
The wins solidified their third place position in the NPSL’s Midwest Conference.
Friday, 3-0 at BW
The biggest goal output of the year for the club came at a good time in the season. Tom Beck, Chris Cvecko and Emilio Spetic all found the back of the net Friday evening.
Beck’s goal turned out to be the game winner. The best part of his goal was the ability to settle, get space, and fire home the shot with the left foot. Cvecko’s goal showed his ability to find the ball in a crowd and finish with authority!
Spetic’s goal was set up by an unselfish Jack Foht. Foht received the ball at the top of the box, but he calmly passed back to the Chardon native/Mount Union senior who found his name on the score sheet.

Sunday, 4-0 at FC Columbus
Sunday was more of the same for the men as they continued their goal resurgence and finished the weekend 2-0, with seven goals and two clean sheets.
By the eleventh minute, Beck had two goals already. Bojan Kolevski and Carter Hancock rounded out the scoring for the visiting CSC. All four goals were scored in the first 22 minutes!
What’s next for Cleveland SC?
Friday night is the second installment of the Akron City FC v Cleveland I-77 derby. The first game ended in a 0-0 draw. Since then, Cleveland seemed to have found their scoring form. Akron is working on theirs. So who knows what to expect?
Akron’s tough loss last Sunday to Michigan was a sign of their improvement, though on the losing end. Cade Cracas, the sideline reporter and media guru for Akron, interviewed head coach Andy Haggarth after the loss, who shared some great insight on his club.

One of the hardest things to do is quickly get so many different folks to gel in a short time, and Akron is just starting to get over that hump. As Haggarth said, its the movement and the creativity and ability in the final third that he wants his club to continue getting better with.

Sunday fun for Cleveland SC
After the huge rivalry match, Cleveland finds their first chance to damage the hopes of the first place Steel City FC. Their match Sunday will be in Pennsylvania, and you can follow again on YouTube.
Or make the drive to Founders Field in Cheswick, PA. Here are the directions to the field, courtesy of Waze.com! Note the TOLLS! You could just take 422 into that state to the east until you find I-79S. Takes a bit longer, but you go through some awesome Ohio towns!
The Pittsburgh club sits in first place but that lead can be damaged on the 25th. SCFC still needs to play 2nd place Michigan and Cleveland again to round out the regular season. Any losses will leave an opening for Michigan or Cleveland to grab the conference title.
Have a great weekend and hope to see you somewhere on the pitch!
