BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio
Garfield Heights Head Coach Lance Reisland definitely had his opponent scouted well tonight when asked what it would take to get the victory against a young Brecksville-Broadview Heights team. “We gotta stop the QB, gotta stop number 5 (Brecksville Senior QB Luke Strnad)” Reisland said. “He’s very, very good. He makes their receivers very good.” Reisland went on to say “They do a very good job coaching over there. I got a lot of respect for Coach (Jason) Black and their D-Coordinator, Coach (John) Shirilla. He actually coached me in High School. I’ve been friends with him for a long time.” He went on to say “We know what to expect. We gotta play hard. We need to match their intensity, we know they will make plays, and we need to respond when they do.”
As well as Garfield Heights’ coaching staff was prepared, they simply could not match Brecksville’s talented group of underclassman, which helped the Bees cruise to an easy 34-0 win.
Brecksville started the scoring barage in the First Quarter, when Junior Running Back Alec Buckley plunged into the endzone to give the Bees and early 7-0 Lead. On their very next drive, Senior Quarterback Luke Strnad found Senior Wide Receiver Joey McGonegal for a 12 yard Touchdown reception. The Bees finished off the scoring in the quarter, when Strnad threw a strike to Ken Ganley for a 10 yard Touchdown.
The Second Quarter is when the Bees shot themselves in the foot on two staight plays. Junior Running Back Jordan Shaheen scampered into the endzone for a Touchdown, however, the play was called back because he hurdled into the endzone, and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, which wiped away the TD. The very next pay, Shaheen scored again, but yet again, the play was nullified due to a holding call. Brecksville missed a field goal on 4th down to come up empty on the drive. Garfield gained some momentum, as they quickly marched down the field, on the strength of two spectacular catch and runs by Wide Receiver JT Gamble. Garfield Heights’ offense sputtered on Brecksville’s 25 yard line, however. That would be the furthest the Bulldogs would drive the rest of the night.
The Third Quarter is a quarter the young Bees would like to forget after being called for holding several times, which wiped out any drive they tried to sustain. As the Bees struggled to get going, the defense was nothing short of outstanding. Brecksville Junior Defensive Back Michael Rose delivered a bone-jarring hit to Garfield Heights Quarterback Jermaine Lewis Camp, which caused him to miss the next series.
Brecksville then got back on the scoreboard in the 4th Quarter, as Rose picked off a Camp pass and returned it to the Garfield Heights, 1 yard line, where Jordan Shaheen ran into the endzone the very next play for the Touchdown. Brecksville capped off the scoring on the night, as Alec Buckley bolted down the right sideline for a 39 yard touchdown run.
Brecksville finished the game with 368 yards of total offense to Garfield Heights’ 112. The Bees were led on offense by Luke Strnad’s 18 of 32 passing, for 182 yards and 2 Touchdowns. Joey McGonegal was the Bees leading receiver with 5 catches for 75 yards, and a Touchdown. Alec Buckley led the Bees ground attack, as he churned out 116 yards on 12 carries and 2 Touchdowns.
Coach Black had this to say about his teams performance tonight, “I was pleased the way our kids performed. I thought we came out really well and finished very well. We had a little lull in the middle of the game, but we’re a young team. I thought we did very well tonight”.
Junior Running back Alec Buckley summed things up best. “I really think we improved a lot from our first game. And I couldn’t do anything without our Offensive Line”.
Next week Brecksville-Broadview Heights hosts Brunswick, while Garfield Heights plays at Mayfield.
