The team could have played just a little harder. There were too many games were garbage time touchdowns were scored by the opposing team, making a few of the games appear much closer than they were. In college football, those things play a role when determining how “convincing” a win truly was. At times it was hard to watch. Statistically speaking, the team as a whole had a 80.2 defensive efficiency rating, which ranked them at 6. That’s good. It was the run the Buckeyes struggled most against, finishing ranked at 21 allowing 1,528 total yards and 127.3 YDS/G. The offense, as I said, had it’s growing pains. On the flip side, sometimes it was the Buckeyes who would turn it up after the first half to get the win. The play at times seemed too complacent, and the offense was moving too slow. The offense finished ranked 63rd in total offense, pulling in 5,147 yards. The passing game came in down low ranked at 106, with 2,244 yards.
Rest easy, Buckeye fans. While a 12-1 season that ended too soon may seem disappointing, Urban Meyer has done tremendous in his first four years at Ohio State. Meyer has a 50-4 record with the Buckeyes, sending his seniors off being tied as the most winningest class with the 2011 Boise State Broncos. He has also captured one Big Ten and Sugar Bowl title, in addition to of course the first College Football Playoff Era national title, and now the Fiesta Bowl victory. Despite knowing there are many great players leaving the program after this season, I think Meyer’s track record says he has it under control, and you can expect to see more years of competitive play to come.
