BRUNSWICK, OHIO- Both the Brunswick Blue Devils and the Austintown Fitch Falcons came into tonight’s game trying to forget about week one losses, knowing that only one team could smell the sweet scent of victory. Brunswick was that one team tonight, defeating Austintown Fitch 24-14 in front of a near capacity home crowd.

Brunswick’s junior quarterback Josh Stacho was busy in the first half as he had touchdown runs of 8 and 3 yards respectively, and also a 64 yard pass to junior wideout Nick Zografos, setting up one of Stacho’s scoring runs and helping the home team lead 14-0 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Fitch’s senior quarterback Brock Zielinski stepped up showing off both his passing and running games. In the second quarter alone he had a 28 yard pass and two runs of over 20 yards. He cashed in two plays after a crucial pass interference penalty that was called on Brunswick, to score on a 2 yard touchdown run to bring the Falcons within 7.

Unfortunately for Austintown Fitch, Josh Stacho was on a mission tonight to get new head coach Mark Pinzone his first win at Brunswick. A 22 yard run by Stacho set up a hard fought 6 yard touchdown run, his third of the night, extending Brunswick’s lead to 21-7 which would be the halftime score at Brunswick Automart Field.

For the third quarter, Brunswick seemed to come out of the locker room somewhat flat on both sides of the ball, much to the dismay of Pinzone. Brock Zielinski was a running machine in this third quarter, running the ball on what seemed like every play, including a 23 yard run early in the quarter. He scored a 2 yard touchdown on another quarterback keeper, bringing the visiting Falcons within 7 and having momentum on their side.

The adjustments Brunswick made going into the fourth quarter not only started to work, they seemed to energize the players as the defense held tight, making certain that the comeback hopes that Austintown Fitch had, were going away with every second that ticked off the clock. Brunswick put the game out of reach with a 21 yard field goal late in the quarter.

Brunswick moves to 1-1 after tonight’s win and Austintown Fitch is still searching for that elusive first win of the season.
