Brunswick escaped with a 56-45 victory over Shaker Heights, thanks to a strong second half.
Brunswick’s trio of Keith Simmons, Kyle Goessler and Zak Zogtafos were a three-man wrecking crew.
Simmons and Goessler finished with 15 points apiece, Zogtafos, their 6 foot 6 big man, put up 16.
Coach Joe Mackey implored his team to get back to basics in the second half, after being down 24-23 at halftime.
“We were struggling in the first half; Mackey said. “But we still were in good shape and I told the guys to play harder and to play fundamental basketball.”
That’s what Brunswick did. Zogtafos hit back to back corner threes to put Blue Devils up 36-31 at the 2:26 mark in the third and his team never looked back.
“I knew I had space in front of me and I knew I was open both times,” Zogtafos said.
“My team did a great job moving the ball and the moment I put it up I was surprised it went in.”
Brunswick was in control the rest of the way. Both Simmons and Goessler added threes of their own, two each in the forth quarter to seal the deal.
“We had a good run in the forth quarter and we knew that we wanted to get out of here with a win” Goessler said.
