MEDINA, OHIO- High school football is finally here. The air is crisp, the teams are ready to play, and the bands are in mid-season form.
The visiting Brunswick Blue Devils came into tonight’s game hoping to win their second straight season opener against the Highland Hornets, but this time they knew it would be a battle in front of a near sellout crowd at North Gateway Tire Field.
The Highland Hornets seemed ready to play right from the start. Senior quarterback Matthew Earnest hit wide receiver Jake Rogers for a 65 yard touchdown bomb in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Highland poured it on even more as the Blue Devils looked over matched at times as the Hornets took a 21-0 lead going in to the locker room at halftime.
Whatever Brunswick head coach Mark Pinzone said to his team in the locker room, he should repeat it every week. His Blue Devils came out showing they too can show off the long ball as they scored on a Josh Stacho touchdown pass, bringing Brunswick within 14.
Unfortunately for the young Blue Devils, the Hornets went on to score on a 22 yard run by senior running back Brent Ponikvar and Highland went up 28-7 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw most of the Brunswick faithful head to the exits early as despite the Blue Devils scoring on a Josh Stacho touchdown run, Highland was the better team in this game as they take the win 28-14 and showed that they are poised to make their way back to the state playoffs.
A tip of the cap goes to the Blue Devils though as they refused to give up despite being down by 21 at the half. Although this may turn out to be a trying season for this young squad, you can feel that Brunswick has a bright future under Pinzone.
