Last time around the word was Browns owner Jimmy Haslam very much wanted Adam Gase as the next Browns head coach before settling for Mike Pettine.
Now, a few years later, it appears that they have lost out on Gase again, this time to the Miami Dolphins.
Gase spoke with the Browns on Wednesday, and was reported to be right at the top of the list of possible candidates, but Armando Salguero at the Miami Herald says it looks like Gase is taking his talents to South Beach.
All signs point to Gase as the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins if he and the team suffer no setbacks during their meeting Saturday.
Gase is the man owner Stephen Ross had as his favorite before the interviews even began.
Interestingly, I was told other men on the Dolphins’ search committee had other favorites before the process began. I know of one member of the committee who entered the process thinking former Buffalo coach Doug Marrone was the best fit for the Dolphins.
Marrone interviewed Friday as did interim coach Dan Campbell, as did Mike Smith, Mike Shanahan, Teryl Austin, and Anthony Lynn before that.
Gase was the OC with the Chicago Bears, and is regarded as a bright young mind in the NFL that many think will make a solid head coach.
He just won’t be doing it with the Browns, who now instead will chat Sunday with two Bengals coordinators after their Wild Card game tonight with the Steelers, OC Hue Jackson and DC Paul Guenther.
