The question of what it will take to get Alex Smith is the big one. Everyone wants to point to the Jimmy Garoppolo trade to San Francisco for a second round pick as a benchmark. I’m going to say that it is not. How many people after hearing that trade when it was announced thought the Patriots got a good deal out of it.
One to two percent, maybe? San Francisco got an absolute steal out of it and Garoppolo only seemed to prove that by leading the 49ers to five straight victories as a starter to close their season. Let’s look at other recent trades involving QBs. Backup QB Jacoby Brissett was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for 2015 first round pick Phillip Dorsett.
While Dorsett did not live up to expectations, he was still a first round talent two years ago for a third string QB. Brock Osweiler was salary dumped to the Browns with a sixth and second round pick for a fourth round pick. Sam Bradford was traded to the Minnesota Vikings last year for a first and fourth round pick. Maybe the most telling of all was the Browns failed attempt to trade for Bengals backup QB AJ McCarron. In that attempt which happened even after the Garoppolo trade, the Browns were willing to offer a second and third round pick for him.
