A new name has popped up for the Browns in their search for a new head coach, as Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will be in Cleveland Sunday to chat with the team.
Eberflus is a local product as he’s a native of Toledo, and he is no stranger to the Browns as he was the teams’ linebackers coach from 2009 to 2010.
He went on to coach with the Dallas Cowboys from 2011-2017, first as linebackers coach and later passing game coordinator.
Eberflus had an interesting introduction to the Colts, as at first he was part of the staff that Patriots OC Josh McDaniels was putting together as he was set to be the teams new head coach.
McDaniels at the last minute pulled out of the coaching job, and returned to New England, but Eberflus stayed on with new eventual head coach Frank Reich.
The stock of Eberflus has continued to rise as the Colts defense has played better late in the season, and Saturday they held the Houston Texans to one touchdown in a 21-7 AFC Wild Card win to move on in the playoffs for a meeting with the New England Patriots next weekend.
The Colts were 11th in the league in yards per game this season allowing 339.4 yards per contest, and Indy gave up 21.5 points per game.
Eberflus isn’t the only Colts assistant the Browns have interest in, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says that Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni is also on the Browns short list.
