Day one of camp and done and over for the Browns, and a lot of eyes were on first overall pick quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield is going to be a huge fan favorite among Browns fans this summer, but as has already been determined, the team has their opening day starting quarterback in place, that being offseason pickup Tyrod Taylor.
While Taylor is entrenched as the starter, Mayfield said after day one that he’s not going to settle very long to be the teams’ second-string quarterback.
“I would never get my mind right to be a backup. That is the second that I would be complacent,” Mayfield said.
“That is the second that I would stop working. You always have to keep working like you are going to be the best. That is the same thing (QB) Tyrod (Taylor) has done his whole life, as well. It does not matter the position that you are in; if you are not going to work hard, then you are not doing it right.”
It’s the right attitude to have for a player who will be one play away from taking the field. As everyone knows in the NFL, having more than one quarterback is critical to a lot of teams success in the league.
For the Browns and their young QB, he seems ready to step up and do whatever he can to help the team.
“I go out here to say that I am trying to make this team better,” Mayfield said.
“Whatever role that is, I am going to try to do that.”
