5. Just for kicks
At the very least, and I sound like a broken record here, but the Browns have zero complaints about the guys they have kicking the football – veteran punter Andy Lee and rookie kicker Travis Coons.
After suffering through some pretty brutal and inconsistent punters over the past several seasons, including Derrick Frost, Spencer Lanning and Reggie Hodges, among others, I’ll give Farmer credit for going out and getting Lee for a low draft pick. He may be one of the highest-paid punters in the league, but he’s worth every single penny.
The Browns spent two years trying to find a replacement for beloved veteran Phil Dawson and they may have finally stumbled into one in Coons, who hasn’t missed a kick – field goal or extra point – this season. If there is a knock on Coons, is that you don’t know how strong of a leg he has – the Browns have not attempted any 50-plus yard field goals this season and his longest kick is a 48-yard extra point in his season opener. But as long as he continues to find the middle of the uprights, it’s all good.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention long snapper Charley Hughlett, who took over for an ineffective Christian Yount last season and has, apparently, been very consistent with his snaps. I haven’t noticed any low snaps or high snaps all season long. Nobody has mentioned him, which is probably a good thing, so I’ll give him some love.
