4. May the Schwartz be with you
Earlier this week, the Web site ProFootballFocus.com revealed that Mitchell Schwartz was its’ top-rated right tackle (a link to that story is right HERE. To which I replied, “Have they actually been watching any of the Browns’ games this year?
Schwartz certainly validated that report Sunday with his play. I’m being extremely sarcastic here. I’m not a Schwartz fan by any stretch of the imagination, and he continued to get beat like a drum all day Sunday. While he wasn’t the only guilty party – left tackle Joe Thomas looks extremely overrated this year, as has center Alex Mack, left guard Joel Bitonio and right guard John Greco – the timing of the report put the spotlight on the third-year tackle, and he wilted under that spotlight.
I noticed first-round rookie Cameron Erving did play quite a bit Sunday, whether as an extra tight end or in a rotation with Greco at the guard spot. Erving committed a holding penalty Sunday, only adding insult to injury for this beleaguered unit. You wonder if the Browns ruined this unit when they suspended, then fired position coach Andy Moeller on the eve of the regular season because of a domestic violence complaint.
In the meantime, your starting quarterback on Sunday could be a guy who had a domestic violence complaint made against him just two weeks ago. I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.
