2. McCown’s mercy killing
Coming into this season, I had low expectations for 36-year-old journeyman quarterback Josh McCown. Even though he’s only led the Browns to one win in his six starts this year, he hasn’t been the problem. In fact, he’s actually played reasonably well.
That being said, he took a pounding Sunday against the Rams defense. He was sacked four times and was hit officially seven more times, although it appeared to be more than that. He was forced into two fumbles on hits that were both turnovers – one of which led to a field goal that gave the Rams an early 10-0 lead. He suffered at least four different injuries before finally retreating to the training room with an injured throwing shoulder late in the fourth quarter.
Once again, his running game was non-existent and his offensive line was overrated and overmatched all day long. His receivers lost two fumbles after receptions (although I thought the first one was an incomplete pass). Despite that, he threw for 270 yards with no touchdowns, no interceptions and only six incomplete passes all game.
If I were a betting man, I’d believe that McCown sits out next Sunday’s game against Arizona, turning the offense over to Manziel and ex-Rams starter Austin Davis, who had only been active for two games this season.
