Noted: Hoyer was allowed to leave as a free agent, and the Browns instead signed veteran journeyman Josh McCown – the older brother of 2004 rookie starter Luke McCown – to be the new quarterback. Manziel checked himself into rehab with substance abuse issues that plagued him throughout his rookie season, which firmly entrenched McCown as the starter. Shaw was lost for the season with a broken wrist, and Davis, who started eight games for St. Louis last season, was signed following the final cuts. McCown became the 13th different opening day Browns starter since 1999, but – in typical Browns fashion – suffered a concussion during his opening drive of the game and was lost. Adding insult to injury, McCown fumbled on the 1 before he could cross the goal-line thanks to the hit. Manziel, who had missed the past two weeks with elbow tendonitis, was thrust into action and did little to show he was the Browns’ QB of the future in what turned out to be a 31-10 loss to the Jets. Manziel will start the third game of his NFL career on Sunday in a Heisman showdown with rookie Marcus Mariota, and Davis will be the backup since McCown has yet to clear concussion protocol. Who knows what else will happen this year, but it’s shaping up to be a dismal one.
Hope that was informative for you. Thanks to pro-football-reference.com for their game-by-game boxes and complete season breakdowns. I may know a lot about the Browns, but it’s easier to have things backed up by facts.
Until next time, remember that Cleveland Rocks!
