Browns play Steelers to a rare tie in Week One: 5 Takeaways

4) New team same Tyrod

After watching Deshone Kizer struggle at quarterback in 2017, acquiring an eighty-year veteran with playoff experience like Tyrod Taylor this offseason was certainly an upgrade for the Browns. Still, there’s a reason why the Buffalo Bills were ready to move on from the dual threat signal caller. A look at Taylor’s final stat line will provide some context.

Taylor dazzled as a runner, picking up 77 yards on eight carries and scoring the Browns first touchdown of the season. That’s never been his problem. As a passer though, Taylor was 15-of-40 for 197 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Now, granted that touchdown pass was probably one of the best throws of his career, but those underwhelming passing performances are par for the course with Taylor. In fact, he is only 2-13 for his career when attempting 30 or more passes. Make that 2-13-1 now. He also had the worst possible timing for his lone interception, with the Browns on the fringe of field goal range at the end if regulation. Anyway, on a day where the defense was gifted six turnovers they needed more from Taylor. Instead, they wound up punting 12 times.
