Browns Fall to Ravens 23-20 with Controversial Penalties

Browns Ravens

Baltimore, MD

The Cleveland Browns left Baltimore with yet another loss falling to the Ravens 20-23. Jacoby Brissett led both teams in passing at 22/27 for 258 yards, no TD’s, and no INT’s. A fumble in the first half however led to Ravens points.

Things started out strong for the Browns. They scored a touchdown on the game’s opening drive, and they seemed intent on getting Nick Chubb rolling.

Baltimore answered with a field goal. While the Browns tacked on one of their own. The score was 10-3, Cleveland at the end of one.

Browns Ravens 2nd quarter

Special teams mistakes and a quick 3-and-out by the offense in the 2nd quarter saw the Ravens outscore the Browns 10-0 in the period. Taking a 13-10 lead into the half. The Browns forced the Ravens to punt after a 3rd and long stop. But Kevin Stefanski decided to challenge the 3rd down play when it looked like the defense had sacked Lamar Jackson. The play was upheld. This allowed Baltimore to retry the punt, pinning the offense deep. The offense went on to lose yards running on 3 straight plays.

Browns offsides?

Rookie Kicker Cade York had a 61-yard game tying field goal attempt blocked with two minutes left in the game. The blocked kick came after a controversial offsides penalty. The penalty moved the Browns back 5 yards. Though, it appeared no one on the offensive line moved. Initially, it seemed the flag was thrown on the Ravens. However, after a discussion amongst themselves, the refs called the penalty on Cleveland. The Browns were also called for Offensive Pass Interference. This on a go-ahead Amari Cooper TD reception. Thus taking points off the board on the drive. The drive was set up when the defense forced RB Justice Hill into a fumble in Cleveland territory with a little under 4 minutes to play.

Gus Edwards returned to the lineup for the Ravens and scored 2 touchdowns on 66 yards rushing and Nick Chubb averaged 5.7 yards per carry on 16 rushes and scored a TD as well.

The defense held Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense in check in their best game of the 2022 season. Jackson was 9/16 passing for 120 yards with zero touchdowns and rushed the ball 10 times for 59 yards

By the end of the game the Browns were down to 1 TE as David Njoku who led the team in receptions left the stadium in a walking boot and Pharoah Brown was being evaluated for a concussion.

The loss drops the Browns to 2-5 and the season very much on life support as they get ready for their Halloween matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. The Ravens now lead the division at 4-3 and have a quick turnaround as they travel to Tampa for Thursday Night Football this week.
