3. Browns 7, Raiders 3, Nov. 18, 1973 at Oakland:
The Browns defense held Oakland’s fine offense to 172 yards in 64 plays, sacking quarterback Ken Stabler five times. Cleveland got its points on Mike Phipps’ 7-yard touchdown pass to Fair Hooker.
The Browns pulled to within a half-game of the first-place (and eventual Super Bowl champion) Steelers with a 21-16 home win over Pittsburgh the next week. That made Cleveland 7-3-1, but it faded out of the playoff picture by closing the season with a tie and two losses. The Browns finished 7-5-2. (NFL schedules didn’t expand to 16 games until 1978) The Raiders were 5-4-1 after the loss to Cleveland, but won their next four games to win the AFC West, and won one playoff game.
