4. Browns 20, Chiefs 7, Oct. 12, 1986 at Cleveland
The Browns’ defense held Kansas City to 126 yards of total offense, as Cleveland became 4-2 on its way to a 12-4 record and the Central Division championship. The Browns then defeated the New York Jets 23-20 in two overtimes in a playoff game at Cleveland Stadium. Then, the Browns fell to the Denver Broncos 23-20 at Cleveland, in the AFC championship game remembered for Denver and quarterback John Elway driving 98 yards for a last-minute fourth-quarter touchdown to force overtime.
Bernie Kosar threw for 287 yards on 22 completions in 35 attempts. His 16-yard touchdown pass to Earnest Byner left the Browns and Chiefs tied, 7-7, at halftime. Ozzie Newsome scored on a 6-yard pass from Kosar in the third quarter and Matt Bahr followed with field goals of 34 and 36 yards.
Top Browns’ receivers included Byner (five catches for 51 yards), Newsome (4-47), Herman Fontenot (4-44), Reggie Langhorne (3-59) and Brian Brennan (3-54).
The Chiefs became 3-3. They finished 10-6 to earn a wild card but lost in the playoffs to the Jets, 10-7.
