3. Browns 33, 49ers 21, Nov. 3, 1968 at San Francisco
Leroy Kelly gained 174 yards on 27 carries as the Browns won their third straight game in a winning streak that would grow to eight. And, it was the third of seven straight games in which Cleveland scored at least 30 points.
The victory made the Browns 5-3. They closed the regular season as Century Division champions at 10-4, then upset the Dallas Cowboys, 31-20, in a playoff game at Cleveland Stadium. The Baltimore Colts then routed the Browns 34-0 on the lakefront for the NFL title and a trip to the third Super Bowl — which, of course, Baltimore famously lost to Joe Namath and the underdog New York Jets, 16-7.
The Browns trailed San Francisco 14-3 in the second quarter before taking a 16-14 halftime lead on Bill Nelsen’s 32-yard touchdown pass to Milt Morin and two Don Cockroft field goals. The Browns boosted their margin to 33-14 on Kelly’s 2-yard scoring run, Cockroft’s fourth field goal and another Nelsen-to-Morin pass, this one from 15 yards.
Nelsen actually had one of his worst passing days, completing 11 of 33 for 148 yards. Morin had six catches for 71 yards and Paul Warfield had four receptions for 63 yards. Cleveland intercepted two 49ers passes and recovered three fumbles.
The 49ers became 4-4 on their way to a 7-6-1 season.
