1. Browns 34, 49ers 14, Nov. 12, 1950 at Cleveland
In this, their first NFL season, every game would ultimately prove important for the Browns as they would tie the Giants for first place in the American Division with a 10-2 record. Cleveland then topped New York 8-3 in a playoff for the division at Cleveland Stadium, and won the championship with a dramatic 30-28 home win over the Los Angeles Rams.
This victory made the Browns 7-2, while San Francisco dropped to 2-7 on its way to a 3-9 finish.
The Browns’ defense, remarkably, came up with nine 49ers turnovers: three interceptions and recoveries on six of the 49ers’ eight fumbles. Cleveland’s offense was keyed by Marion Motley’s 114 yards on 21 carries. His 2-yard touchdown run, following Otto Graham’s 7-yard scoring pass to Dub Jones, helped the Browns to a 14-14 halftime tie. Graham finished 7 of 17 for 74 yards as the Browns offense totaled just 229 yards, but didn’t need more thanks to the 49ers’ generosity.
All of the Browns’ second-half points followed San Francisco giveaways, with Browns lineman Jim Martin making an interception and recovering a fumble. Lou Groza kicked two field goals, Jones ran three yards for a touchdown and Rex Bumgardner had a 12-yard scamper into the end zone.
